Anticipating the Future in Whistler

The Whistler Weasel Workers were christened, many years ago, by Bob Parsons, an early race organizer in Whistler, as he watched a group of race workers boot-packing the Weasel, a steep section on Whistler Mountain's Dave Murray Downhill course.  Well, here we are again, arm in arm, walking down the Weasel knocking the air out of soft snow.  After this the winch cats may follow, and  probably a  "fertilizer program", follwed pass after pass by the slip crews , all to create a rock-hard surface for world-class ski racing.

What's changed over the years, is that our members now come from across Canada, the USA and from around the World to help prepare for future events.  For success, we need an experienced core team of volunteers who know their jobs, know the "hill" and who work well together.  We have two separate downhill tracks to prepare, a Men's course on the Dave Murray Downhill and a brand new Women's course on Whistler's Franz's Run .  We will have new equipment and new procedures and new people.    There will be a lot to learn!

In 2006, 2007 and 2008, we expanded our team of local volunteers to include many race workers from across Canada and the USA.  As we approach  2010, we expect to almost double our numbers.  We will need all of our existing volunteers to return, each with one new volunteer!  Over the past two years we have been increasing our numbers of Section and Crew Chiefs, who are learning to be be our "on hill" managers and trainers.  This  will continue in 2009.   See "Opportunities in 2008/2009".

Keep tuned to hear about the plans for 2009 and the opportunity to become a key part of our Weasel Worker team.
