Ski Race Course Repair and Maintenance

The following provide references and information about different aspects of repairing and maintaining  alpine ski race courses during setup and at race time.

1. Gate Maintenance-  a summary of gate maintenance for course crew, gate judges and coaches.  Gate maintenance is critical to ensuring the course remains as consistent as possible from first racer to last. It is important that gate maintenance be constantly and regularly performed from the close of course inspection through to the end of the race. Snow Damage and Repair (.pdf)

2. Creating a Snow Patch - initially. it may not be necessary to harden the racecourse. However, after several days use, the race line may develop holes that require repair., particularly around gates where athletes pressure their skis the most.. These holes in the snow are repaired using small of amounts of water or a snow patch.

3.  Safe Use of Crampons -  In order to complete their assigned tasks, some course workers will be required to use crampons. Crampons are rigid metal spikes that are attached to ski boots. They provide increased traction on steep ice slopes.

Care must be taken in the  proper fitting and safe use of crampons.  Inexperienced or casreless use of crampons can lead to injury.
