Crew Chief Tasks

Beyond having.a large amount of experience and technical knowledge of race course construction and maintenance, and of ski racing, Crew Chiefs are leaders and it is perhaps their leadership skill that is their most important quality.

Crew Chiefs are responsible for the safety of their crew members, the training of crew and for helping crew members enjoy their Whistler Volunteer Experience.

The first task of a Crew Chief, long before the race event, is to contact each crew member, soon after the member has registered, and establish a personal rapport with  volunteers. Crew Chiefs should keep in touch with their crew members and ensure that volunteers are making firm travel arrangements, and that their concerns and questions are answered. Wherever reasonable, assist your crew members with their travel arrangements.

After crew members have arrived in Whistler, Crew Chiefs should do everything possible to ensure their crew is well looked after and are having a good time, that their questions are answered and that they are in the right place at the right time.

Our Wistler Weasel Worker Leadership must continually ask themselves, "Have We Thanked The Volunteers Enough?"

It is the little things that make people feel appreciated, especially when they are giving freely of their time and energy.

The type of recognition given to individual volunteers can vary. According to volunteers themselves, they stay involved with community groups because:
  • They are appreciated and respected.
  • They are given meaningful and varied volunteer experiences.
  • They are kept informed and have input into decision-making and planning for the group.
  • We are organized and their time is not wasted.

Recognition Checklist
With the above in mind, please consider practicing the these ideas to show just how much you value the input and dedication of volunteers in your group.

Daily Duties

  • Check in / Pick up lunches
  • Gather crew
  • Confirm your pre-assigned location for the day. This will be noted on the notice board in the morning meeting.
  • Load lift and report to Coordinator or preassigned location.
KEEP THE CREW TOGETHER.
  • Coordinators will dispatch crews to specific sections with the necessary tools.
  • Crews should go directly to the assigned sections as quickly as possible and in a group.
  • Once at the assigned section report to the section chief for direction using a route that will do the least damage to the course.
  • Assist the section chief in the organization of the crew.
  • When the work is completed, notify section chief for additional instruction.
  • If not reassigned, return to course coordinator for further instructions.
    STAY TOGETHER.

Notes

  • There will be times that crews are held at the bottom
  • A dispatcher will be located at the lift to provide information
  • To insure readiness for the next day many tasks will need to be completed after the day’s run. Be sure to check in with the Coordinator for after the run jobs.
  • At times, work assignments on the mid or lower course may require moving down outside of the course and re-entering the course at a lower section. This allows teams working above to finish tasks undisturbed or sections with completed assignments to be left undisturbed by unnecessary movement on the hill.
