The Dave Murray Downhill Course

Dave Murray World Cup and Olympic Downhill Welcome to Whistler Mountain's Dave Murray Downhill Course.  A favorite ski run for visitors to Whistler, the Dave Murray Course has been used for all but one World Cup and Canadian Championship race ever held in Whistler.

The Dave Murray will be the Men's Downhill course for the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympic Games.

Named after a Whistler favorite son, the Dave Murray descends Whistler's south side from the tops of the old Orange Chair (soon to be removed) and the new Garbanzo Chair to the Timing Flats, just above Creekside, the southern access point to Whistler Mountain.   The course is over 3km in length and descends about 780 meters.  With steeps, flats, drop-offs and compressions, the Dave Murray has long been respected on the World cup Circuit as a challenging course, one of the best.

Dave Murray, the person, was a member of Canada's famed "Crazy Canucks", one of Canada's most successful Men's Alpine Ski Teams.  Dave passed away in  1990.  At one time Dave was ranked third in the world in downhill.

Only in 1982 was the south-side course not used for a Whistler World Cup race.  Instead, the "Village Course" was used, which crossed the mountain from the upper Dave Murray to end in Whistler Village.  This course was abandoned as not being sufficiently challenging.

In 2007, the lower part of the course was relocated to make way for the Franz's Ladies Olympic Downhill course, which descends from Wildcard, along mid-Franz's Run, to meet the Dave Murray just below Coaches Corner.  From that point the courses run beside one another to a common finish at Timing Flats.  The original Dave Murray downhill ran through Timing Flats to a finish at Creekside.  However, the finish was brought higher to try to reduce the influence of weather.

The Weasel Worker Web site has three sets of photos of the course;

Aerial Photos   - taken at the time of the 2008 Telus Whistler Workd Cup when the course was race-ready only from the top of the Toilet Bowl (the GS start).

Course Manual  - developed from images taken during the 2007 Canadian Championships

Surface photos - taken in 2006 and earlier.

Upper Dave Murray    -   from the start to the Tunnel (Expressway)

      Mid Dave Murray  -   from Expressway to Coaches Corner

      Lower Dave Murray   -  the earlier course (pre-Olymic changes) from Coaches Corner to the Timing Flats

Also, from YouTube, we recommend the following   Helmet Cam Video  which provides a run-down of the early course to the old Creekside finish.
